Against the Machine: A Single Mother's Desperate Fight for Justice and the Dashcam That Proved It All
Chapter 6: The Driving Record
Back in the office, the air conditioner rattled, fighting the humidity. Marcus sat hunched over his laptop, the blue light reflecting in his intense eyes. He had access to databases that weren't exactly public—expensive subscriptions used by private investigators and skip tracers.
Elena sat on a folding chair, watching him work. "Can they really just pave over the road? Isn't that illegal?"
"It's 'road maintenance,'" Marcus muttered without looking up. "Hard to prove malicious intent unless we find the work order."
He typed furiously, pulling up the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) history for the truck driver, a man named Michael "Big Mike" Kovic.
"Here we go," Marcus whispered. "Mr. Kovic has a pristine record for the last six months. Perfect logs. No violations."
"See?" Elena slumped. "I told you. It's my word against his."
"No," Marcus spun his chair around. "Nobody is this perfect. Not in this industry." He clicked into a deeper archive, searching for expunged records and out-of-state infractions that might have slipped through the cracks of a standard background check.
"Gotcha," Marcus grinned, a predatory look that made Elena shiver.
"What did you find?"
"Big Mike was hired by Omni-Haul three weeks ago. Two weeks before that, a judge in Alabama sealed two DUI convictions." Marcus pointed at the screen. "Omni-Haul’s insurance policy forbids hiring drivers with recent alcohol offenses. They knew. They hired him anyway because he’s cheap."
