Against the Machine: A Single Mother's Desperate Fight for Justice and the Dashcam That Proved It All

Chapter 30: The Aftermath

The verdict hit the news cycle like a bomb. Omni-Haul filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy the next morning, but it didn't matter. The judge ruled that the "corporate veil" had been pierced by Silas’s direct interference. The insurance company paid the policy limit, and the liquidation of Omni-Haul’s fleet covered the rest.

Silas Vane was disbarred and facing a grand jury indictment for witness tampering.

Three months later, a brand new Volvo SUV pulled up to a curb. Elena stepped out. She looked healthy, rested. She wasn't wearing scrubs. She walked into a cafe where Marcus was sitting, reading a newspaper.

"Nice ride," Marcus smiled, gesturing to the car through the window.

"Safe ride," Elena corrected. "Five-star crash rating. College fund is fully funded. My mom’s house is paid off."

She slid a cup of coffee to him. "So, what now? You retiring to the Bahamas?"

"I thought about it," Marcus said, taking a sip. "But then I got a call this morning."

He slid a folder across the table.

"A train derailment in Ohio. Chemical spill. The company says it was 'unavoidable due to weather.' But I found a maintenance log that says the tracks were warped two weeks ago."

Elena laughed, shaking her head. "You never stop, do you?"

Marcus grinned, the old shark-like glint returning to his eyes. "Someone has to fight the monsters, Elena. Interested in a consulting gig?"
