Against the Machine: A Single Mother's Desperate Fight for Justice and the Dashcam That Proved It All
Chapter 21: The Second Offer
The air in the conference room was so thick with tension it felt like a physical weight. Silas Vane, usually the picture of reptilian cool, was sweating. He loosened his silk tie, his eyes darting between Marcus and the damning freeze-frame of the text message on the laptop screen.
"This doesn't have to go to court, Marcus," Silas said, his voice tight. "We can make this go away. Right now."
He slid a new check across the polished mahogany table. It was a cashier's check, certified funds, ready for immediate deposit. Elena looked at the numbers. Two million dollars. It was enough to pay off every debt she had, buy a house, and put her son through college.
"Two million," Silas said. "Tax-free structure. No court. No press."
Marcus didn't even look at the check. "You sent the text, Silas. User ID: SVANE_ADMIN. You ordered the driver to kill someone or lose his job. That's criminal negligence."
Silas paled. He pulled the check back and ripped it up. He pulled a second envelope from his briefcase.
"Five million," Silas hissed. "That is the absolute limit of the insurance policy cap. But there is a condition."
He slid a thick document next to the check. "She signs a complete Non-Disclosure Agreement. She can never speak of this again. The video is destroyed. The audio is deleted. And you admit no wrongdoing on our part."
Elena reached for the pen. Five million dollars.
"Don't touch it," Marcus warned, his voice low and dangerous.
