Against the Machine: A Single Mother's Desperate Fight for Justice and the Dashcam That Proved It All

Chapter 19: The Recovered Video

The week before the trial was a blur of motions and counter-motions. Silas was burying them in paperwork, but Marcus was holding the line.

Then, at 4:00 AM on a Tuesday, Marcus’s laptop chimed. A video file from Kenji.

The subject line read: GOTCHA.

Marcus clicked the file. His heart hammered against his ribs.

The video opened. The resolution was grainy but clear enough. It showed the interior of the truck cab from the perspective of the rearview mirror. Big Mike was driving, the rain lashing the windshield.

But Mike wasn't looking at the road.

Mounted directly above the speedometer, blocking his view of the gauges, was a tablet. A movie was playing—some action flick. But then, a notification banner dropped down, covering the movie.

Mike’s eyes shifted up. He squinted at the tablet. He took one hand off the wheel to tap the screen.

In the video, the truck drifted slightly. Mike looked frustrated. He was reading a text message.

He looked back down at the road, and his eyes went wide. His mouth opened in a scream. He slammed his foot down—you could see his knee lock—but the truck didn't slow.

Impact. The camera spun wildly and cut to black.

"He wasn't just driving on bad brakes," Marcus whispered to the empty room. "He was distracted by a company device."
