Against the Machine: A Single Mother's Desperate Fight for Justice and the Dashcam That Proved It All

Chapter 24: The Trial Begins

The courtroom was packed. The local news had turned the "Dashcam Verdict" into the trial of the century. Elena sat at the defendant's table, her hands clasped to stop them from shaking. Marcus sat beside her, looking grim but focused. He had come back the moment she called.

"All rise," the bailiff bellowed.

Judge Halloway took the bench. He looked tired.

Silas Vane stood for the opening statement. He was masterful. He didn't use notes. He walked in front of the jury, making eye contact with every juror.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Silas began, his voice dripping with sorrow. "This is a tragedy. But it is not a corporate crime. It is the story of a desperate, drug-dependent woman who made a mistake on a rainy night and is now trying to blame a hardworking American company for her own negligence."

The jury looked at Elena. Their eyes were hard. The smear campaign had worked.

"We will prove," Silas continued, pointing a manicured finger at Elena, "that the truck was in perfect mechanical order."

The courtroom doors swung open. A hush fell over the gallery. A man walked in, flanked by two corporate security guards. It was the "missing" mechanic Marcus had tried to meet at the docks—the one whose phone was found in the oil spill.

He walked past Marcus and sat behind Silas.

"Your Honor," Silas smiled. "The Defense calls its first witness."
