Against the Machine: A Single Mother's Desperate Fight for Justice and the Dashcam That Proved It All
Chapter 10: The Offer
The steakhouse was dimly lit, smelling of aged beef and old money. Silas Vane sat in a corner booth, sipping sparkling water. He wore a suit that cost more than Elena’s annual salary.
Marcus slid into the booth opposite him. He didn't order.
"Marcus," Silas nodded politely. "You're looking well. Still chasing ambulances?"
"Still chasing the trucks that hit them," Marcus replied. "Why are we here, Silas?"
"To help your client," Silas said, sliding a check across the table. It was made out to Elena Rossi. The amount was $20,000. "A nuisance settlement. We drop the lawsuit against her, she signs this, and she gets a fresh start. Immediate payout."
It was tempting. Elena could pay off the medical bills. She could fix her car.
"She has $50,000 in medical bills alone," Marcus said, pushing the check back. "This is an insult."
"It's a gift," Silas said, his voice dropping an octave. "Because if you go to discovery, things will get ugly."
"We know about the driver's record, Silas. We know about the repaved road."
Silas didn't blink. He leaned forward. "And we know about Ms. Rossi’s prescription history. The anti-anxiety meds she takes? The ones that carry a 'do not operate heavy machinery' warning?"
Marcus froze. That was confidential medical information.
"Take the twenty grand," Silas smiled, cold and reptilian. "Or tomorrow, the headline isn't 'Truck Accident.' It's 'Drugged Mother Crashes on I-95.' Child Protective Services will be at her door by noon."
