Against the Machine: A Single Mother's Desperate Fight for Justice and the Dashcam That Proved It All
Chapter 27: Closing Arguments
The evidence phase was over. Silas Vane sat in stunned silence, his legal team frantically whispering around him. But the jury wasn't looking at him anymore. They were looking at Marcus.
Marcus stood before them. He didn't shout. He didn't pace. He looked tired.
"Five dollars," Marcus said, holding up a single brake pad. "That is the price difference between the brake pads Omni-Haul bought, and the ones they installed."
"Five dollars," he repeated. "That is what they decided a mother’s life was worth. That is the value they placed on Elena Rossi’s spine, on her career, on her son’s future."
The jury remained silent, captivated.
"They rigged the brakes to save money. They rigged the schedule to save time. And when the inevitable happened, they tried to rig the justice system to save themselves."
Marcus walked over to Elena and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"You cannot give Elena back her health. You cannot un-break her car or her spirit. But you can send a message. A message that says a human life costs more than five dollars. We aren't asking for compensation. We are asking for punishment."
