They Covered Up My Botched Surgery, Now I Am Bankrupting Their Entire Hospital System
Chapter 6: The Ghost in the Machine
Elena froze instantly, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as the black SUV’s bright LED headlights cut sharply through the darkness of her quiet living room. The heavy vehicle’s engine hummed steadily with a low, predatory growl.
She quickly backed her sleek wheelchair away from the window, hiding silently in the deep shadows of the hallway. Marcus had explicitly warned her that suing a billion-dollar healthcare conglomerate would invite severe, unrelenting corporate intimidation.
Suddenly, a cheap prepaid burner phone she had cautiously purchased earlier that week vibrated violently in her lap. The digital caller ID was a completely scrambled string of random, masked international numbers.
"Hello?" Elena whispered into the receiver, her wide eyes fixed entirely on the imposing vehicle parked just fifty feet from her front door.
"Elena, it's Chloe," a deeply terrified, breathless voice rasped frantically on the other end of the line. The former surgical nurse sounded like she was hiding out in a cramped, echoing closet.
"Chloe! You need to legally invoke federal whistleblower protection laws right now," Elena urged, keeping her voice incredibly low. "My lawyer, Marcus, can secure you complete legal immunity and actively shield you from the hospital's vicious corporate retaliation tactics."
"It's entirely too late for basic legal shields, Elena," Chloe sobbed, her voice trembling heavily with raw, unfiltered panic. "The hospital's private security team knows absolutely everything. They illegally hacked my personal devices and found out I slipped you the encrypted surgical drive."
Elena watched in sheer horror as the SUV's heavy driver-side door slowly cracked open. A tall, broad-shouldered man in a sharp, dark suit stepped out into the freezing night air, casually adjusting his silk tie.
"Listen to me very carefully," Chloe whispered, her breathing incredibly ragged and fast. "Dr. Sterling knows exactly where you live, and he knows you retained a lawyer. Whatever you do tonight, do not eat or drink anything from your fridge."
