They Covered Up My Botched Surgery, Now I Am Bankrupting Their Entire Hospital System

Chapter 11: The Traitor

The sterile, aggressively air-conditioned conference room felt more like a corporate execution chamber than a neutral legal setting. Marcus and Elena sat silently on one side of the massive mahogany table, waiting for the preliminary pre-trial hearing to commence.

The heavy double doors swung open, and Dr. Sterling’s elite legal defense team marched in. They were flanked by a small army of paralegals carrying pristine, heavily redacted medical binders.

"We don't need to waste the court's time with baseless accusations," the lead defense attorney drawled, smoothing his silk tie. "We have secured an impeccable, undeniable source to completely invalidate the plaintiff's ridiculous claims."

"We are introducing formal expert medical witness testimony today," the slick lawyer announced, handing a thick evidentiary folder to the court reporter. "This testimony will definitively prove that Ms. Vance's tragic paralysis was an unavoidable anatomical failure, completely absolving my client and shutting down this frivolous insurance claim."

Marcus leaned forward, his predatory instincts immediately flaring. He knew exactly how ruthless the hospital's corporate risk management team could be when backed into a corner.

"They couldn't possibly find an honest, board-certified neurologist to legally perjure themselves against an unaltered MRI," Marcus whispered to Elena, rapidly scanning the strict medical malpractice defense statutes on his tablet. "This has to be a paid corporate shill."

Elena squeezed the armrests of her wheelchair, a cold knot of pure dread forming in her stomach as the heavy mahogany doors slowly opened again. She expected to see a stranger, some wealthy, retired surgeon paid off by the hospital's massive legal slush fund.

Instead, the man who walked into the room carrying a worn leather briefcase was someone she trusted with her life.

Elena's breath hitched violently in her throat, her entire world suddenly spinning out of control. The defense's star expert witness was Dr. Aris—her very own, deeply trusted primary care doctor.
