The trial resumed three days later. Marcus Thorne attended in handcuffs and a neck brace.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
"We find the defendant, OmniCore Industries, guilty on all counts," the foreman read. "Wrongful death. Fraud. Conspiracy."
The courtroom erupted. Judge Harrison banged her gavel, demanding silence for the sentencing.
"The evidence of malice is overwhelming," she declared. "In addition to compensatory damages for the families, this court awards punitive damages in the amount of $150,000,000."
It was a death blow to the company. A complete liquidation.
Jack didn't cheer. He simply closed his eyes and let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding for twenty years.
He looked at the empty seat next to him—the space where his father should have been. He imagined his dad in his work boots, smiling.
