The 50-Million Dollar Loophole: How One Widow Broke the Bank
Chapter 13: The Slap
Julian stared at the heavy ink on the cashier's check. Half a million dollars. It was more than enough to buy his mother a comfortable condo and clear his own mounting debts.
He took the check, slipped it into his briefcase, and drove straight back to the historic Victorian home. Eleanor and Marcus were sitting in the living room, anxiously waiting for news.
Julian walked in, his face an unreadable mask of corporate pragmatism. He opened his briefcase and laid the massive settlement claim directly on the coffee table.
"We need to be realistic," Julian said, his voice flat and clinical. "We are fighting a billionaire institution with unlimited resources for legal representation."
Marcus stood up, his face flushing with anger. "Julian, you can't be serious. That money is soaked in blood. Accepting a corporate settlement payout means letting Sterling do this to the next victim!"
"It means my mother doesn't end up homeless or dead in a drawn-out contingency fee lawyer battle," Julian fired back, his tone hardening. "We take the money. We surrender the deed. We walk away alive."
Eleanor had been entirely silent, staring at the check with absolute disgust. The silence in the room grew heavy and suffocating.
She stood up slowly, her frail frame practically vibrating with righteous fury. She walked up to her estranged son, the man who was supposed to be her ultimate defender.
She didn't say a word. She just raised her hand and struck him across the face with everything she had.
Eleanor overhears Julian, slaps him, and kicks him out of the house.
