She Stole My Milk. Then Her Lawyer Sent a Demand Letter.

Section 10 Chapter 10: Calling in Joanne

I retreated to my kitchen, my hands shaking with a mix of anger and sheer panic. I needed legal help, and I couldn't afford a high-priced downtown firm.

I picked up my phone and scrolled until I found Joanne's number. We had been friends since high school, and she was now a ruthless, sharp-witted attorney specializing in personal injury and insurance fraud.

"Mike," she answered on the second ring. "Long time no see. Tell me you didn't electrocute yourself on a job site."

"Worse," I sighed. "My neighbor is suing me for half a million bucks because I wouldn't let her steal my milk."

There was a long pause on the line. "I'm coming over. Put on a pot of coffee."

Twenty minutes later, Joanne was sitting at my kitchen island, speed-reading the legal documents. She didn't laugh. Her brow furrowed in concentration.

"This is a classic shake-down," she said, tapping a red fingernail against the medical report. "They found a shady doctor to draft a bogus cardiac assessment. It's a textbook fraudulent claim."

"Can we just show the judge the videos of her stealing?" I asked hopefully.

Joanne shook her head. "They're framing this as a civil dispute over an 'implied verbal contract.' The theft is a separate issue. They want to tie you up in litigation until you run out of money and settle."

"So what do we do?" I asked, feeling a heavy weight press down on my chest.

"We fight fire with fire," Joanne said, pulling a legal pad from her briefcase. "I'm drafting a hard-line refusal to pay, citing a lack of duty of care. We are calling their bluff."

We spent the next two hours drafting the letter. By the time she left, I felt a sliver of hope.

That night, I went to bed feeling like I finally had a shield. But at 2:00 AM, my eyes snapped open.

The house was dead silent. My bedside clock was dark. The power was out.

A second later, the distinct, violent sound of shattering glass echoed from the front yard.
